ACEC Virginia selects Atkins’ 4D modeling tool and web portal for
Engineering Excellence Honor Award

Alexandria, VA – The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Virginia has selected Atkins’ 4D modeling tool and web portal to receive an Honor Award in the 2012 Engineering Excellence Awards competition.

The award was presented to Atkins senior program manager Regan McDonald, PE, LEED AP, during the Engineering Excellence Awards Gala at The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, Virginia, on February 2.

To support the planning and program management of the $4.5 billion expansion of Virginia’s Fort Belvoir Army Garrison under the Base Realignment and Closure Act of 2005, Atkins created a visualization tool to illustrate all development activity in time and space. The model combines 3D building informa¬tion models with planning data, AutoCAD files, and environmental and infrastructure GIS layers, while adding a fourth dimension—time—by incorporating project schedule information. Atkins worked with the client to build a web portal for access to the tool, providing project managers, installation staff, and senior leaders an animated view of the entire 5-year construction program.

“The web portal helps give users a quick, visual, color-coded snapshot of construction progress for more than 6 million square feet of new facilities being added to the base,” explains McDonald. “The Fort Belvoir 4D model has become the tool of choice for brainstorming, decision making, and conflict identification and resolution. The ACEC Honor Award is a great way to celebrate the project’s success.”
