Tampa, FL – As a member of the Hensel Phelps design-build team, Atkins provided civil engineering for the University of California-Irvine Humanities Gateway building, which has now achieved the highest LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating—Platinum. Fentress Architects served as the project’s architect.
This $29-million project is the fifth building in the Humanities quad. The 76,207-square-foot facility includes a 110-seat auditorium, film studio, art and art history classrooms and offices, open laboratories, and the International Center for Languages and Translation. The project provides instructional and support space to accommodate existing and projected programs and student enrollment for the School of Humanities.
The project was completed on time and under budget, and has won two awards for the year 2010: the Gold Medal Award issued by Building of America, and the National Design-Build Award from the Design-Build Institute of America.
“Atkins was proud to be part of the team that worked on this highly successful project,” says Kevin McDonald, PE, Atkins senior project manager. “The result is an iconic, and now award-winning, new addition to the UCI campus.”
Atkins provided civil engineering services including grading and storm drain design, permitting, as-built plans, demolition plan, site plan, hydrology and hydraulic study, erosion control plan, ADA accessibility plan, and construction administration support.
