Newport News, VA – Scott Borges, PE, Atkins senior program manager for design and engineering, was recently nominated and confirmed as a National Board of Direction member of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME). In this role, he will help lead the preeminent professional development organization connecting the US military services with their private sector consultant service providers.
For 28 years, Borges served as a Civil Engineering Officer in the US Air Force before his current 6-year tenure with Atkins. He will apply that experience to team with senior leaders of the uniformed services engineering organizations, as well as senior directors of peer consultant firms.
A 30-year SAME member and part of the SAME Academy of Fellows, Borges served the SAME Hampton Roads Post as 2nd Vice President and currently leads the Post’s Readiness Committee. His efforts for SAME include accepting various leadership positions in eight different SAME Posts worldwide; assisting in the creation of the Shogun Post on Okinawa, Japan; and serving as President of the Pikes Peak Post.
“Throughout his many years of faithful service to SAME, Scott’s passion has been working with students and supporting the next generation of engineering and design professionals,” says Atkins senior vice president and SAME Fellow Marvin Fisher, LEED AP.
In Okinawa, Borges helped middle school math students get “hands on” experience with surveying equipment through various field exercises. And while serving as the Hampton Roads Post’s liaison to their Virginia Tech Student Chapter, he created and led the first-annual “Punkin’ Chunkin’ Trebuchet Catapult” competition between Virginia Tech and the Virginia Military Institute. This entertaining event lets university students design, construct, and compete with their catapults in a battle to see which team can fire a pumpkin the farthest.
As a member of the national SAME International Committee, Borges served as Vice Chair for Europe. He is also a member of the American Council of Engineering Companies’ International Committee. His personal awards include the Bronze Star Medal and the Air Combat Command SAME Newman Medal.
“Scott’s service on behalf of SAME has touched many lives and has reflected Atkins’ own principle of giving back to our profession. He will be a valuable addition to the National Board of Direction,” adds Fisher.
A long-time corporate supporter of SAME nationwide, Atkins is a Sustaining Member of 45 SAME Posts with more than 200 employee members throughout the US. For more than a decade, Atkins Sustaining Member representatives have served on the SAME Board of Direction and have taken active leadership positions, serving on boards and conference planning committees, mentoring young professionals, and supporting educational activities. In 2011, the Atkins Foundation awarded a $50,000 Challenge Grant to the nationwide SAME Education Scholarship Fund.
