Laughlin AFB Design and High Definition Survey

USA-TX | SECTOR:

Under an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract, Atkins is providing architecture-engineering services at Laughlin Air Force Base, located outside of Del Rio, Texas. One task order involved high definition surveying (HDS) for assessment and replacement of the existing fire protection system associated with Hangar 2.

Atkins provided expertise in the areas of high-definition surveying, architectural design, structural engineering, and electrical engineering.

The remote location of the base (a three-hour drive from the nearest major city or airport), along with the lack of reliable facility documentation, posed significant project challenges that Atkins successfully overcame through the use of HDS technology. A Leica Geosystems HDS-6000 laser scanner was used to accurately identify existing conditions and assess structural integrity of the maintenance hangar to support redesign of the fire protection system.

The time and cost savings achieved through the use of 3-D laser scanning was reinvested into engineering a more economical wet fire protection solution for Hangar 2.
