Southwest Florida Airport Aircraft Rescue Firefighting Facility (ARFF)

USA-FL | SECTOR: Buildings

Atkins provided design, construction administration, permitting, and bidding services for this 31,052-square-foot ARFF building to replace the existing facility at the Southwest Florida International Airport. The new building provides space to support the authority, while being located to allow for minimum response time after construction of the new runway.

The ARFF facility includes one main public entry access point with three interior secured door control points. The primary interior area features an open space with direct access to the administrative offices, restrooms, kitchenette, and large training room. The main lobby corridor provides a dynamic flow of movement throughout the facility and direct access to the primary interior spaces, dormitories, and apparatus bay. The ARFF provides space for five drive-through apparatus bays that can house ten vehicles.

The architectural features, interior finishes, and strategic signage reinforce the visual connections made between the main corridor, adjoining corridors, and activity spaces, and the design allows for natural light to enter into nearly all spaces—reducing power demands, without creating unwanted glare. The facility was designed and constructed to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification.
